Zelda - Skyward Sword

The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess have teamed up, it seems, to kill an era in video game control. Nintendo doesn’t think it’s possible to ditch motion control for the Zelda franchise.

Here is The Legend of Zelda producer, Eiji Aonuma, during the interview with The Official Nintendo Magazine:

“I honestly think we cannot go back to button controls now, so I think that these controls will be used in future Zelda titles, too.”

If you’ve been a member of the herd for even a marginal length of time now, you’ll probably be able to attest to the fact that I am a fan of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. In fact, I’m a big fan of the Zelda franchise in general. I’ve even written full articles about my early experiences with the brand and how much it meant to me.

With that in mind, realize that what I’m about to say comes from a supporter…

This news stinks. Motion control is wonderful, and all, but I absolutely hate the idea that Nintendo is dismissing traditional control entirely from the Zelda formula. I get that the company is trying to link (heh, get it?) their flagship property with their banner control method, but I genuinely miss traditional game control from time to time when I play Wii titles. To hear that future Zelda games will not use standard button controls is a major bummer.

Why not give gamers more than one option? HAL Laboratory did it with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and Nintendo EAD did it with Mario Kart Wii. Those games let gamers use GameCube controllers if they like, completely negating the need for motion control.

Furthermore, what does this imply for the Wii U tablet controllers? Will gamers even be able to use the device’s major feature for the next generation of Zelda titles? Or will they be forced to play with motion control only?

What say you, herd readers? Do you like the idea that Aonuma feels Nintendo can’t return to traditional button controls for The Legend of Zelda?
