Xiaomi has begun sending out invitations to an "i is Coming" event in New Delhi, India, on Thursday, April 23. The company is expected to announce its next Mi smartphone during the keynote, and it may well launch in India first.

As a Chinese company that has been doing very well on its home turf, Xiaomi has traditionally launched new devices in China before they go on sale in other emerging markets. But recently, the company has been doing very well in India.

In 2014, Xiaomi sold more than 1 million smartphones in India alone, and that's a pretty impressive figure when you consider that until February, its devices were only available through limited-time "flash sales."

With that in mind, Xiaomi could well be planning a new launch for the Indian market. A tagline on the company's "i is Coming" webpage teases a "global Mi phone premiere," and promises "welcome gifts" for fans who attend.

The event is expected to be a pretty significant one, then, and both Xiaomi CEO Bin Lin and global vice president Hugo Barra in attendance.
