In 2018, Xiaomi will continue investing in Google’s Android One alongside its own MIUI.
The Chinese company sent out a teaser confirming a follow-up to last year’s Mi A1 is in development. Details are light, but we have to assume it’ll be called the Mi A2. It should also run stock Android as the teaser includes Android One branding. The initiative calls for a clean take on Android and Google-operated software updates.
Based on the previous model, the Mi A2 could be a repackaged version of an existing device. The Mi 6X comes across as the most likely candidate. So we should expect a capable mid-ranger from Xiaomi.
If that does hold true, the Mi A2 will ship with a 5.9-inch Full HD+ display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 660, up to 6GB of memory, 128GB of storage, 20MP and 12MP rear cameras, a 20MP front camera, a 3010mAh battery, and Android 8.1 Oreo.
The Mi A2 could even ship with Android P out of the box depending on when it’s released. Google should make the latest version of Android public by the end of the summer.
While there isn’t any confirmation of this yet, it looks like the Mi A2 will debut on July 24. Xiaomi is hosting some type of global launch event on that day in Madrid, Spain. The Mi A2 seems to be the perfect fit to debut there.
