If you’re unfamiliar with the classic X-COM franchise, then XCOM: Enemy Unknown‘s trailer might be a little deceptive. This is a turn-based, tactical strategy game. You’ll command a squad of soldiers in small skirmishes that require you to move, turn by turn, into firing positions. It’s a lot slower in pacing than the trailer above lets on.
It’s still great, though. This is a classic style of gaming that’s, unfortunately, fallen off the mainstream radar in recent years. It’s not all run, cover, shoot, cover, shoot, run. Players will be required to methodically plan out their loadouts, their methods of attack and their selection of squad members.
Oh, and if you lose someone in a battle, they, and their rank, are gone forever. That’s XCOM, folks.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be available for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC platforms starting next Tuesday, Oct. 9.
