Xbox boss is promising more exclusives and some new unannounced games this year

Eric Frederiksen
8 Feb 2017

Despite having a strong summer, Microsoft’s console is still in second place, and the company needs to keep giving gamers reasons to buy their games. One of those reasons is great exclusives. In that department, Xbox head Phil Spencer is promising a good year ahead for the system.

A fan hit Spencer up on Twitter to ask if Microsoft is “going to make any good exclusives for the Xbox One.” Spencer replied that the company is planning more first-party games than we saw in 2016 and launching new IP as well. The games planned also have more diversity than the previous year.

I feel very good about this year. Should have more 1P games than last year, great diversity + launching new IP.  Good year.

What do we know so far?

This year, Halo Wars 2 is just a couple weeks away, while State of Decay 2 and Sea of Thieves are planned. We’re expecting Crackdown 3 to hit this year after tons of delays. We’re assuming Turn 10 has Forza Motorsport 7 in the works, though even as a racing fan I wouldn’t mind a year off from the series to give it some time to breathe. That’s already a pretty good lineup, and with the Xbox Scorpio planned for this fall, it seems likely Microsoft will want to have some impressive stuff lined up to really show it off. While some games will certainly be patched to look better the way we’ve seen with the PlayStation 4 Pro, game patches aren’t exactly system sellers.

Who knows – maybe this is when Blinx the Cat will finally make his triumphant return.
