When leaked images from the set of Wonder Woman 1984 hit the web, we were surprised to see Chris Pine reprising his role as Steve Trevor. As you may remember, he perished at the end of the first movie to help stop Ares, yet somehow he will be resurrected and show up 70 years later in the ’80s. A new plot leak seems to explain the great mystery.
Note: Wonder Woman 1984 spoilers are discussed in this post.
Sources close to the production told We Get This Covered that Steve’s return is directly linked to Pedro Pascal’s character, Maxwell Lord. The new DC villain will reportedly be on the hunt for magical artifacts that he believes can make him a god. He’ll work alongside archeologist Barbara Ann Minerva, who is being portrayed by Kristen Wiig.
Along the way something goes haywire with one of the artifacts, turning Minerva into Cheetah as she seeks revenge from Lord. To stop her, Lord seeks out help from Wonder Woman and uses one of his artifacts to resurrect Steve to persuade her.
So it seems Wonder Woman 1984 will explore the mystical side of things to revive one of the key characters of the franchise. This will lead to some great fish out of water scenarios as a World War I era Steve gets dropped into the flashy and vibrant ’80s. That plus he added a great humanity to the first movie and played off well with Wonder Woman.
Unfortunately, it will be a while before we see Steve dealing with the ’80s and reuniting with Wonder Woman, because Wonder Woman 1984 won’t be arriving into theaters until June 2020.
