Nokia Lumia 830-11

Microsoft is expected to share more details on Windows 10 for phones next month at Mobile World Congress, but you can try the new mobile operating system for yourself right now. The company just released the first technical preview for its new smartphone software, though it's limited to just a handful of Lumia devices for now.

The Windows Insider Program now covers the Lumia 630, 635, 636, 638, 730 and 830. Unfortunately, more high-end Windows phones like the Lumia 1520, Lumia 930 and Lumia 1020 aren't included for now, though hopefully they'll make the cut next time around. Meanwhile, cheaper models including the Lumia 520 will eventually get a scaled-back version of Windows 10 with some of the same features.

Windows 10 for phones is set to offer a drastically improved experience, with tons of new features and a fresh look to match. The biggest upgrade could be enhanced communication between mobile and desktop, especially when it comes to notifications. Skype will also be integrated right into the main messaging app, while recent leaks suggest we could get a stand-alone audio recording app and a redesigned alarm clock as well.

We can't wait to try out the mobile version of Windows 10 for ourselves, and we'll be back soon with some first impressions. Until then, you can check it out too, provided you have one of the six included Lumia devices.
