With Yoda no longer in the picture, who is going to be that wise voice of reason, the personality in the Star Wars universe that imparts knowledge and advice to our heroes? According to J.J. Abrams, Maz Kanata is set to fill the role.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Abrams revealed some of Kanata’s backstory, saying her eyes are an important aspect of her character.

“I had some specific ideas about how she would work and what she would do… you’ll see how it plays out,” Abrams teased.

By the way: Maz is that cute little alien creature wearing the goggles on the official poster for The Force Awakens (above). Her voice can also be heard in the most recent trailers, though it still isn’t clear who she’s talking to. However, one thing’s for sure: she is very much aware of the Force, making her an important well of information for characters such as Finn and Rey.

“Her history is that she was a pirate for a long time,” Abrams said about Maz. “She’s lived over a thousand years. She’s had this watering hole for about a century, and it’s like another bar that you’d find in a corner of the Star Wars universe.”

We got a quick glimpse of Maz’s home base in the recent trailers, though we’re not entirely sure what brings Han, Finn and Rey to her humble abode. That information, of course, is being kept a secret by Abrams, as is Maz’s deeper backstory, which the director said is “coming out in other venues,” not necessarily in The Force Awakens.

Does this mean we’ll learn more about Maz in a future movie? Or in a video game or book?

Abrams reveals more about Maz in his interview with Entertainment Weekly, including his decision to make her character CG, rather than practical.
