A recent report suggested that Google was eyeing a possible $1 billion bid for the popular messaging service WhatsApp. That rumor was quashed by WhatsApp director of business development Neeraj Arora on Tuesday. The exec didn't provide a quotable statement, but told AllThingsD that the rumors of a possible buyout were false.

Late last year a similar report said Facebook was trying to buy WhatsApp, but that rumor was also denied. It never quite made sense since Facebook had recently acquired a similar service called Beluga at the time. WhatsApp is often viewed a catalyst for the death of text messaging and is, in many ways, a direct competitor to BBM, iMessage and other chat services. It's available across several platforms including iOS, Android and Windows Phone.
