Over the years, stories have come out about different comic book movies that were in development but fell through for one reason or another. Once such movie was a horror-focused Batman movie that Aquaman director James Wan wanted to make.
When Wan first burst onto the scene, it was due to the unexpected success of Saw, one of the most iconic horror movies to come out over the last two decades. That spawned one successful horror franchise and Wan later stumbled upon a second horror franchise with the Conjuring universe, but the movie he really wanted to direct was a horror Batman movie.
In a recent interview with Heroic Hollywood, Wan talks about the movie he really wanted to make before taking up directing duties for Aquaman, and his response was something that was not expected.
“In the past like most people I loved the idea of directing Batman, but a horror version of Batman,” Wan said. “That would be a potential fantasy of mine, but I feel like he’s been done quite a fair bit. But, I do love the idea of doing an outright scary Batman. I feel like it’d be really cool.”Wan isn’t kidding, it would be really cool to see a scary Batman movie. As it is, Batman has a lot of horror elements and incorporating them with action, similar to what Zack Snyder did with the factory scene that introduces the Caped Crusader in Batman v. Superman, would serve for a very interesting take on the Dark Knight.
Unfortunately, this is not a direction Warner Bros. would ever go given he is a marquee DC character. But with Wan already working with the studio, that may be something the two revisit in the future.
