Maybe you've heard about this Watch_Dogs game. It's been getting a lot of hype over the last two years as being the next big franchise and was the face of "next-gen" until a delay pushed it back to release this week. I think you know the one.
Well, Ubisoft has confirmed that Watch_Dogs is a certified hit. While the France based publisher didn't have any specific numbers to share, it confirmed that the game is the largest day one success in the company's history, beating out the likes of Assassin's Creed, Rayman, and Splinter Cell. Creative Director Jonathan Morin gave the update over at UbiBlog.
"I once said that the buzz around Watch Dogs was driven by the incredible passion of our early fans. Today we broke the record for the biggest first day sales in Ubisoft history. I can never say it enough: thank you everyone! We love you all for your passion and your creativity."
Video gamers are starved for new IP and new ideas, but I say that the two don't always go hand in hand. Watch_Dogs does borrow a lot from the Grand Theft Auto series, but there is certainly enough going on behind the scenes to give it the flare or originality that most fresh IPs lack these days. Perhaps Rockstar might want to take a glimpse and see if it can find any elements that might be worth incorporating into their popular open-world crime franchise.
Congrats to Ubisoft. I'm really going to miss Watch_Dogs marketing. The company did a great job getting it out there even if it felt like an eternity. Still, when are we ever going to get another game that can reach the marketing genius of Microsoft when it was hyping Halo 3. I don't think that will ever happen again, do you?
We still have the Wii U release to wait for, but something tells me Ubisoft isn't going to be sinking the same amount of funds into the marketing campaign for that one.
