Vivo has announced its latest flagship, and the NEX is straight-up incredible. The BBK Electronics-owned brand included high-end specifications but did so within a groundbreaking design.
Although there’s an edge-to-edge display, you won’t find a notch or even an enlarged forehead. The NEX boasts ultra-thin bezels without any compromise because Vivo stores the front-facing camera inside its body. It has a pop-up mechanism to expose the camera for selfies, so you get a glorious 91.24% screen-to-body ratio to enjoy all the time.
The NEX is also missing a traditional earpiece. Vivo uses Screen SoundCasting, an in-house technology, to turn the entire display into a speaker. But the brand didn’t stop there. Vivo’s NEX has an in-display fingerprint scanner for intuitive, quick authentication.
As others have been struggling to implement in-display fingerprint scanners, Vivo is already on its third generation of the technology.
On paper, the NEX is still beastly. It features a 6.59-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED display, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845, 8GB of memory, up to 256GB of storage, 12MP and 5MP rear cameras, an 8MP front camera, a 4000mAh battery, and Funtouch OS based on Android 8.1 Oreo.
Vivo also has a watered-down version of this flagship that has a processor from the Snapdragon 700 series.
Like most mobile devices released as of late, the NEX makes use of artificial intelligence. The phone can recognize different environments and adjust the camera’s settings accordingly. Vivo also bundles Jovi, its own digital assistant.
The NEX won’t be sold everywhere, sadly. Vivo is limiting its availability to China where the base model will cost around $610. If you’re in China and want the premium model with the Snapdragon 845, the NEX will set you back $700 to start.
Vivo didn’t say the phone will be available outside of China in the future, but hopefully other companies borrow some ideas from the NEX. The industry would certainly benefit from thinking of alternatives to the notch.
