Z3 Tablet Compact Hands-On: Sony Gets A Serious Contender

by Brandon Russell | September 3, 2014September 3, 2014 3:40 pm PST

Sony has always offered a strong tablet lineup, but the devices have never really hit the same heights as iPads or Nexus devices. The company got close with the Z2 Tablet, but it needed that extra oomph—that something special to truly be great. With the Z3 Tablet Compact, we’re certain Sony has finally done it.

The big news is that the Z3 Tablet Compact supports PS4 Remote Play, which is one of the flagship features of Sony’s new Z3 series. That ability sounds great on a phone, but it’ll be even better on the tablet’s 8-inch display 1920×1200 display. Under the device’s thin and light frame is a 2.5GHZ quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor, 3GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable memory, Android 4.4, 4500mAh battery and an 8-megapixel camera. It’s also rated IP65/68, which means you can safely play games by the pool.

Having used the Z2 Tablet earlier this year, I’m really excited to see how the Z3 Tablet Compact stacks up, especially against the possibility of a new Nexus, not to mention NVIDIA’s SHIELD Tablet, which is one of our favorites. Will this be the device that finally puts Sony tablets on the map? We’ll find out soon. For now, check out the device in action in the video above.
