Toshiba Chromebook With 13.3-inch Display Hands-On!

Toshiba came to the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show with several new products in tow, but the one that most caught our eye was its Chromebook — the first such device to sport a 13.3-inch display. All things considered, it’s a relatively no-frills device, but that’s the point of Chromebooks. You get a fully functional laptop with a fully sized keyboard and access to most of Google’s services at a very low cost.

In fact, the Toshiba Chromebook will retail for just $279.99 when it hits the market in February. It has a 13.3-inch display, the same size as the larger MacBook Air, but a relatively low 1366 x 768-pixel resolution. Under the hood, it’s powered by an Intel Haswell processor and has 2GB of RAM, in addition to 16GB of solid state storage, two USB 3.0 ports, a full-sized HDMI port, Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11 a/b/g/n Wi-Fi and more. Google is also tossing in 100GB of Google Drive storage, which means you’ll have plenty of space for storing ChromeOS apps in the cloud.

We really like the larger display on the Toshiba Chromebook. We certainly wish there was a touchscreen display and more storage, but Toshiba itself admitted that it has to keep costs down. The hood is really plain, too: you won’t find any of the pizazz that the Chromebook 11 from HP offers, and it wouldn’t have hurt Toshiba to make it more pleasing to the eye. The keyboard was comfortable, though, and after a few minutes we’re confident that the 9 hours of battery life and size make it a great option for folks who need a no-frills device with access to Google’s ecosystem.
