Self-driving cars: putting those words together sounds like a science fiction fantasy. In the short existence of motor vehicles, it always seemed crazy to think about cars that drive themselves. Surely technology can’t replace an actual human behind the wheel. Turns out, the prospect of conceding complete control over to an autonomous vehicle might not be all that far off.
Among Google, Audi and a number of other companies, Nissan recently threw its hat into the autonomous race. Through implementations of laser scanners that analyze your surroundings and an improved AI, Nissan claims it can make self-driving cars a Thing by 2020—that’s a lot closer than you think. Nissan says it’s not only motivated by the idea of pushing technology forward, but potentially cutting road-related deaths with self-driving cars.
