Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet unboxing: Impossibly thin and light

It wasn’t the best tablet we’ve ever used, but the Xperia Z2 Tablet was still a very solid effort from Sony. This year, it has a successor that’s even better, and it could very well be the next Android tablet to beat.

Announced at Mobile World Congress a few months ago, the Xperia Z4 Tablet combines thinness with lightness—at just 6.1mm, it’s as thin as the iPad Air 2, and at just 393g, it’s one of the lightest tablet on the market; it practically floats away out of your hands. That makes for some comfortable viewing after long Netflix marathons, and certainly makes a difference during daily use.

What’s great is that the Z4 Tablet isn’t just thin or light; it sports some truly powerful specs, while retaining its lovely water-resistant super powers. The 10-inch display has a resolution of 2K (2560 x 1600), and it now comes with an octa-core Snapdragon 810 processor. Plenty of power, but it still gets plenty of usage thanks to its 6000mAh battery. Sony says this thing can chug through 17 hours of video playback, though we haven’t had the chance to put those claims to the test.

Even despite its diminishing frame, the Z4 Tablet comes with a very nice soft touch back that’s easy to grip—something that’s very important considering the device’s extreme thinness. It still sports some hefty bezels all the way around the display, but you hardly notice with the black model, which is the one we received.

You’ll also get PS4 RemotePlay support, which is an added bonus for gamers.

Check out our unboxing of the Z4 Tablet to see it in action. We received the LTE model, though there is a Wi-Fi-only model as well. Both devices come equipped with 32GB of expandable storage.
