Rettinger’s Rants: Social Media’s Role in Real World Tragedies

by Brandon Russell | April 17, 2013

Jon R. is back with an all new show where he rants and raves on various topics in and out of the tech world. On this week’s episode, Jon rants about our instinct to use our smartphones to post on social media websites before helping people during emergency situations.

On Monday, the Boston Marathon was ended shortly due to two explosions that caused hundreds of injuries and some fatalities. Moments after the explosions we were all made aware of the catastrophe via our social media feeds, while reports of the incident came out much later on traditional news sources like CNN. While many people rushed to help those impacted from the blast, others decided to be the first to share the indecent on social media sites.

During an emergency situation like this, would your first response be to share or to help? All this and more in this episode of Rants!

Check out the video and let us know what you think in the comments below! Also be sure to check out the show every Wednesday on the TechnoBuffalo Revision 3 channel at 5 PM PST.
