While at CES 2010 we had an opportunity to meet with Jim Pape, Senior Director of Microsoft’s new ‘Game Room,’ one of the many products announced during Microsoft’s keynote. Game Room is a virtual classic arcade where gamers (and their Avatars) will battle it out on some of the most classic cabinets from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. According to Robbie Bach, president of Microsoft’s Entertainment & Devices Division, “There’s a generation of people who grew up with a set of games like Centipede that are favorites. They look almost like casual, fun games today, (but) at the time they were high-end, edgy games. Game Room is the idea of bringing that back to the market and bringing that to a very broad audience.”
Game Room will sit next to Netflix on the dashboard, and will be treated as a standalone app available as a software download sometime in late Q1. I’m a kid of the 80’s, so naturally I was pretty excited, but to those of you younger than me, who don’t remember Centipede, does this do anything for you?
