iPhone 6 Dummy Unit Hands-On: Comparing Apple’s Future With Its Past

It’ll be a while before we get an official look at Apple’s upcoming iPhone 6. So, until then, we got our hands on a dummy unit to provide you with a look at what very well could be Apple’s next big flagship. Numerous reports have claimed Apple is ready to go big, and a recent barrage of leaks suggest that the dummy unit up above is indeed Apple’s preferred iPhone 6 design. Although this is simply a dummy unit, we might be glimpsing Apple’s very probable mobile future.

Naturally, with such a dramatic redesign on the way, we wanted to see what the iPhone 6 looked like next to Apple’s existing mobile devices, the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. If you’re familiar with Apple’s iPad mini, iPad Air or even its iPod touch, the design of the iPhone 6 will definitely look and feel familiar. The chassis is comprised of even more aluminum, rounded off edges, and an extremely thin body that even bests the iPhone 5s, which is thin in its own right.

But the iPhone 6 isn’t just thinner; it’s taller as well. With a 4.7-inch display, the device is dramatically larger than the current 4-inch-toting iPhone 5s, though it doesn’t feel like as big of a jump as it sounds. Maybe we’re just used to using larger Android devices, but the increase in size feels like a natural progression—not too big, and not too small. I was worried that a larger screen would make it feel a little unwieldy, but that’s not the case at all, and the repositioned sleep/wake button makes one-handed use simple.

While we still don’t know for sure that this is indeed the final design of Apple’s iPhone 6, it’s probably pretty close. We definitely think it can be cleaned up a bit, especially with the large antenna bands and big bezels on top and bottom. But, for the most part, we’re really looking forward to seeing what the final product looks like. Until then, we’ll be going over this dummy unit with a microscope.
