HTC One (M8) Google Play Edition Unboxing

We already brought you our review of the standard HTC One (M8), a device we dubbed the “best Android smartphone, period.” Now, we’re bringing you our first look at the Google Play Edition of the device in this unboxing video. Google sells the HTC One (M8) GPE version for $699.00 direct from Google Play, and it’s only available in glacial silver.

In the box, we found the standard paperwork and charger, in addition to a set of white HTC headphones that differ from the black/red ones we had in our original review box. The phone, as you guessed, runs a pure version of Android 4.4 KitKat without Sense 6. There’s one small piece of software from HTC, however, called HTC Photo Edit that lets you use the Duo Camera depth sensor to tweak the focus later. It also supports the 3D Dimension Plus mode found on the original One (M8). However, the rest of the custom camera settings that HTC added are gone, which is kind of a shame considering they’re really great. Also of note: the Dot View case accessory, which is one of the more unique cases we’ve ever seen, actually works with the HTC One (M8) GPE. We slapped it on and it worked just fine, even with the double tap gesture to show the time and weather.

Overall, this is (mostly) vanilla KitKat device that we think a Android purists will definitely enjoy. Check out our full unboxing above for more information.
