Galaxy S8 vs OnePlus 5: Flagship killed?

by Brandon Russell | July 7, 2017

The Galaxy S8 is the closest thing to perfection, while the OnePlus 5 provides a flagship experience at an affordable price. So, which device is the better buy? Unsurprisingly, the two are very close in terms of overall quality, with the Galaxy S8 just barely edging out thanks to its design, screen, and excellent camera.

As we’ve done in previous battles, we looked at both phones holistically, exploring different features and how they combine as a whole. While the OnePlus 5 doesn’t quite match the Galaxy S8’s immaculate all-glass design, the device does provide superior software and an enticing starting price.

When it comes to screen technology, however, the Galaxy S8 wins hands down. Not that we’d expect any different—Samsung’s mobile displays have been receiving wide praise from around the industry, to the point where Apple is expected to use OLED panels manufactured by Samsung for the upcoming iPhone 8.

Where the OnePlus 5 really stands out is in its software. OxygenOS has been a strong suit since arriving a few years ago, and it’s only gotten better over time. Not only is it elegant and light, but it offers neat tweaks that elevate the Android experience. And there’s no bloat, which still plagues devices to this day.

Unsurprisingly, the OnePlus 5 also beats the Galaxy S8 in performance thanks to its combination of a Snapdragon 835 processor and 8GB of RAM. The Galaxy S8 is no slouch, but there’s a tangible difference when bouncing between apps and playing graphics-intensive games. The OnePlus 5 will make you wish all phones came with 8GB of RAM.
