Galaxy S6 Edge unboxing: Samsung’s most exciting device yet

The future is now, and it sports a screen with two edges that slope down. It’s a bit like the awesome, but underutilized, Galaxy Note Edge, but even better. Samsung hinted the Edge concept might just be a one-off, but thankfully it’s more aggressively exploring the idea. If you thought the Galaxy S6 was exciting, just wait until you see the Galaxy S6 Edge. With few exceptions, this is one of the most exciting devices we’ve ever seen in the smartphone market.

The great thing is that the S6 Edge isn’t watered down to accommodate the curved display; it’s essentially identical to the Galaxy S6, but even more ambitious. To be fair, it still doesn’t look like Samsung has found a major selling feature for the curved display, though it does look awesome and futuristic. You do get some neat S6 Edge-specific features, but not really enough to really make it a must-have.

What’s surprising about the S6 Edge is how comfortable the curved edges feel after a short period. The sides are a little awkward because they aren’t rounded, but it still feels great in the hand, and makes swiping through home screens and different Lollipop menus super easy. To the point where a plain flat smartphone display just seems downright boring. And I guess that’s the kind of progress we demand from our smartphones nowadays.

I’m glad Samsung is continuing to champion the curved phone trend, even if it won’t necessarily be the immediate future in the mobile market. If I had to pick right now, I’d definitely go for the S6 Edge variant, but only because the curved display is so much more fun to play around with; the display itself still looks phenomenal, so there’s no worry there.

Check out the video above to see the Galaxy S6 Edge in action. We’ll have plenty more S6 Edge coverage in the coming days, so stay tuned.
