Barnes & Noble Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight Hands-On!

Barnes & Noble just announced the brand new Nook Simple Touch with GlowLight and we’re absolutely in love with it. We spent the morning hanging out with Barnes & Noble checking out the new eReader in direct sunlight and in a bedroom in the dark. The device is exactly like the original Nook Simple Touch, although slightly lighter (pun intended?), but it also has a new GlowLight function for reading at night.

GlowLight works flawlessly. Simply hold the home button for about two or three seconds and a backlight automatically turns on. The soft white glow reminds us a bit of the old backlights on Timex watches, but it spreads out evenly across the surface and is easily adjustable from the eReader’s main menu. We already loved the Nook Simple Touch because it offers incredible battery life — up to two months — and even with the GlowLight turned on we’re told the new eReader should last up to a month if you read for a half hour every day. That’s pretty amazing.

I love tablets but I hate reading on them in the dark because the screens are so bright. And I love eReaders but I hate having to turn on a light while my significant other is sleeping. The new Nook Simple Touch GlowLight offers the best of  both worlds: it works just as well in sunlight as it does in the dark. Pre-orders start today for $139 and units will be available in early May. You can bet we’ll be bringing you a full review and an unboxing as soon as possible.
