Today Apple decided to defend their 20 government issued patents and filed a lawsuit against handset giant HTC. The breadth of these patents range from the unlock screen to how the camera draws power from the battery and everything in between. First instinct I think is going to accuse Apple of bullying, posturing, and just whining at Android in general. However, further scrutiny I think will show that they really are just defending the patents issued to them by the government….and that’s the problem. The US patent office issued such broad patents that it would be impossible for any handset manufacturer not to infringe on them. And why did Apple just go after HTC, and not Google, or Sony, or Samsung? We run through all of these details and more. How do you think this is all going to play out? I don’t think this will ever reach the courts, and may end in Apple losing their broad patents.
