Verizon Wireless announced on Tuesday that it will begin selling the Pantech Marauder, its latest 4G LTE smartphone, on August 2 for $49.99 with a new two-year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate.

The Pantech Marauder is a budget-friendly device, but it packs a bit of a hardware punch. It's equipped with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth 3.0, 1GB of RAM, a 5-megapixel camera and support for adding up to 32GB of additional storage using a microSD card slot. It also supports Mobile Hotspot for sharing the phone's 4G LTE connection with up to 10 Wi-Fi-enabled devices. Verizon didn't specifically say if the device runs Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or Gingerbread, but it certainly doesn't run Jelly Bean. We can also tell from the image above that it has a custom user interface provided by Pantech.

On the high end, we still think the Galaxy S III is the best phone Verizon Wireless offers. You could also opt for the Galaxy Nexus, which is now free from Best Buy.
