Venom has become such a runaway success that a sequel is definitely happening.

When Venom opened in October, there was a lot of apprehension given the largely negative reviews the movie received. But after an impressive opening at the box office, it looked like there would be a happy ending for Eddie Brock and his favorite symbiote. As of this writing, Venom has grossed $850 million at the global box office, making it one of the top movies of the year.

As a result, a sequel is definitely happening, according to screenwriter of the first movie, Jeff Pinkner. Pinkner was recently interviewed by Discussing Film, when he revealed that Venom 2 is happening.

“I can’t say anything other than that it is happening,” Pinkner said.

That’s a big win for the studio, which has struggled for years to make something out of its Spider-Man properties.

It was always planning on making multiple Venom sequels even before the movie arrived in theaters, but when a movie endures negative reviews, that’s usually the kiss of death for potential sequels. ButVenom managed to overcome adversity and now its first sequel has been greenlit.

With the success of Venom and the overwhelmingly positive reviews for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, it looks like Sony’s Spider-verse is alive and well after all.
