The man who created The Fifth Element and Lucy is back with a passion project of epic proportions, and it’s one of the most beautiful and imaginative movies you’ll ever see.

Not that we expected anything less from Luc Besson, who has become one of science fiction’s auteurs. But Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets busts the door down and runs wild with lush landscapes, insane aliens, and incredible technology. If a world like Valerian exists out there, I’d love to visit.

Based on the best-selling French comic series, Valerian follows the title character (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) as they travel to the city of Alpha to uncover a dark force which threatens the peaceful existence of the beautiful world. The foundation of a good plot is there, but the story ultimately takes a backseat to the movie’s visuals, which are among the best you’ll ever see on film.

In other words, if you thought James Cameron’s Avatar looked beautiful, just wait until you see Valerian in all of its glory. Now that the movie is out on Blu-ray and digital HD, you can enjoy the film’s splendor with a ton of added content, from a multi-part documentary to an exploration of the many characters we meet through the adventure.

If you’re a science fiction fan, Valerian is a must-own simply for its lurid fantasy and incredibly imaginative worlds. It’s impressive that a project like Valerian can even exist, and seeing it in motion is such a treat, even if the story doesn’t quite live up to the visuals.
