Gartner recently released its preliminary figures for PC sales during the fourth quarter of 2014 and for the entire year. The firm noted that total global PC shipments increased 1 percent over Q4 2013 to a total of 83.7 million units sold during the quarter, totaling more than 315 million units sold during the year. U.S. PC shipments totaled 18.1 million units in Q4, up 13.1 percent from the year-ago quarter.

Lenovo was the global leader during the quarter on a global scale, with a 19.4 percent of the PC market, up 7.5 percent from the year-ago quarter. It was followed by HP with an 18.8 percent share, Dell at 12.7 percent, Acer with an 8.1 percent slice of the pie and ASUS with a 7.5 percent market share. While in the U.S., HP remained the top vendor with a 29.2 percent share followed by Dell (22.6 percent), Apple (11.7 percent), Lenovo (10.2 percent) and ASUS (6.8 percent).

Gartner said U.S. PC sales were driven by a strong holiday season and increased demand for “notebooks, thin and light notebooks and 2-1s.” The firm said consumers preferred a price point between $200 and $300. “These results support our assumption that consumer spending is returning to the PC as tablet penetration has reached the majority of the market,” Gartner principle analyst Mikako Kitagawa said.

The research firm said that growth in emerging markets was slower than mature markets, with growth at about 2 percent, because consumers, constrained by limited disposable income, prefer to purchase smartphones over PCs for Internet access.

Gartner warned that the figures are still preliminary and that final figures will be available soon. Though if these numbers do hold up it seems to be welcomed news for an industry that in recent years has seen massive declines.
