Following in the footsteps of AT&T and Verizon Wireless, U.S. Cellular on Monday introduced new shared data plans that allow several devices to share a single bucket of data. Similar to how Verizon and AT&T price their plans, you'll pay a flat monthly rate per month for a specific device, and then the recurring data charge for the amount of data that suits your lifestyle best.
U.S. Cellular will charge $40 for each smartphone on the plan, $30 for each "basic phone," $20 per modem and $10 per tablet. Each plan includes unlimited messaging and minutes. A 1GB option is available for $50 each month, 2GB will set you back $60, 4GB is available for $70 and data hungry users can also opt for 6GB per month ($80), 8GB per month ($90) or 10GB per month $100. We'll do some quick math for you: assuming a family with four smartphones wants to share 8GB of data per month, you'll pay $40 per smartphone ($120) plus the fee for 8GB of data ($90) for a total of $210 per month. On the lower-end of the data package spectrum, those plans are on a par with Verizon though more expensive than AT&T.
The aforementioned plans are just a sample of what U.S. Cellular will offer, however. The carrier says it will provide up to 75GB per month for $560, or as little as 300MB per month for $40.
