Unsung Story was supposed to be the next great JRPG from series icon Yasumi Matsuno. At least, that’s how it was pitched on Kickstarter back when it gathered a whopping $660,000 from fans eagerly looking to relive the days of Final Fantasy Tactics.

However, the game never came to be. Long periods of silence from developer Playdek and a lot of behind the scenes business deals it couldn’t talk about came to an end Monday when it sent an email to backers, saying that it was no longer handling development on the game.

Through the trials we have had as a company over the last few years, Playdek has strived to keep the project alive, as we believe in the game and the story that Yasumi Matsuno designed to set it in. To that, we want to let you know that the project is going to continue forward, but our involvement is coming to an end.

Instead, the project is being passed on to a gaming company called Little Orbit, who also addressed fans in a follow-up email.

We started as a small game developer in 2003, and have grown into a small publisher in the last 7 years. To date we have primarily focused on retail with 20 titles on many different platforms working alongside Cartoon Network, Dreamworks, Warner Bros, and Mattel.

CEO Matthew Scott also addressed his company’s resume, knowing that backers would check out the company name and find games like Barbie and Her Sisters: Puppy Rescue, Kung Fu Panda: Showdown of Legendary Legends, and Adventure Time: Finn & Jake Investigations.

Inevitably many of you will google us, and you may have your doubts – which is okay. This project has struggled. But give us a little time, and hopefully we’ll surprise you.

I am a gamer at heart, and my first love has always been turn-based tactics games. I met the Playdek team a couple months ago and got a firsthand look at the amazing work from Yasumi Matsuno. Simply put, this game needs to exist, so I am excited to be taking this project over and helping deliver it to the community.

Little Orbit also is taking a gamble on its own creativity and said that the project is starting entirely from scratch. Most likely, it will use the ideas and story of Yasumi Matsuno, which it praised in the email, but it won’t be using any of the resources that Playdek created over the last three years.

 We need to focus on the original single player game and Matsuno’s design that was promoted during the campaign. And that is exactly what we are going to do. At this point, our primary goal is to separate the years of modifications and changes that were made while Playdek attempted to deliver something to their backers.

Backers will be happy about the return to single-player, which Playdek proposed it would scrapping in favor of PVP.

I recognize that this project is now more than 2 years late from when it was originally supposed to ship, but rather than jump into lofty promises, I want to level set expectations with a bit of both bad and good news.

No reason to panic since we wrote this off years ago

More power to Little Orbit for undertaking this. I won’t slag them for their resume since they are at least working, actively have jobs, and trying to make it in a cut-throat industry. I’ll actually commend them and wish them the best of luck with this because, who knows, it might even be their big break when all is said and done.

As for the game itself, my expectations haven’t changed one bit. I wrote this off a while ago, and until I start seeing some progress, I won’t change that point of view. That’s not to say I’ll hold it against Little Orbit for ultimately not being able to deliver. As far as I’m concerned, they are doing backers a favor, trying to deliver on a game they wouldn’t be getting otherwise.

As usual, Unsung Story remains something I’ll check in on every now and then.
