Last month, Universal Pictures took the wraps off its Dark Universe revolving around classic monster. The main characters it announced were The Mummy, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, The Wolfman, and The Creature from the Black Lagoon. But now you can add two more names to the list: The Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
In an interview with Fandom, director and producer Alex Kurtzman revealed the two new additions.
“We know we’re going to do Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Invisible Man,” Kurtzman revealed.
Kurtzman is the director of the first movie in the Dark Universe, The Mummy, starring Tom Cruise, Sofia Boutella and Russell Crowe. Needles to say, he has a pretty good insight as to the ongoings of the budding movie universe.
The Phantom of the Opera and The Hunchback of Notre Dame are two of Universal’s more famous monsters, although today’s generation may not be familiar with them. The former is mostly associated with the prominent musical while the latter is known for the famous Disney animated movie. Yet, Phantom had his own horror-focused movie in 1923 as did the Hunchback in 1925.
Kurtzman didn’t reveal any detials as to when we can expect their standalone movies. Currently, The Mummy will kick off the Dark Universe this month, followed by Bride of Frankenstein in February 2019. It will star Javier Bardem as Frankenstein and will be directed by Beauty and the Beast director Bill Condon. Aside from that, the only other details we know right now is that Johnny Depp will portray The Invisible Man and Russell Crowe will play Henry Jekyll.
Universal isn’t wasting any time in building up its universe, so hopefully we’ll find out more details soon.
