Undertale, a silly little game about a kid who winds up lost in a world of monsters, proved to be far more controversial than it had any right to be. Fans propped it up as the best game ever, haters pushed back at its indie roots and unconventional themes, fans pulled out their internet swords and spilled blood to get others to admit to how great it was, haters reacted by calling them names like "snowflakes." Somewhere in the mix, it won a "Greatest game ever poll" on GameFAQs, and that really caused both sides to lose their minds.
Geez, just settle down, you all! It's a silly little game about a kid who winds up lost in a world of monsters… relax! It was also my Game of the Year choice for 2015, but whatever. I liked it, and I'll pick it up for the PlayStation 4 and PS Vita when it launches this week.
However, I'll pick it up because I want to, not because of how well these legendary game designers promote it in the launch trailer. These are just silly, almost as silly as Undertale, which is, after all, just a silly little game about a kid who winds up lost in a world of monsters.
- "It's incredible… I can't get enough! Oh, sorry… I was talking about croquettes." – Shigesato Itoi, Earthbound
- "A huge, epic RPG that took me 50 hours to beat… …of course I was drunk or passed out for maybe 40 of those." Yoko Taro, NieR: Automata
- "I'll say whatever you guys want. I just really, really want to be in this trailer." Tim Schafer, Day of the Tentacle, Psychonauts
I can't wait to go on a date with Papyrus again
As I've said on many occasions, I can't just sit and play video games attached to a television or PC anymore. I can only find time to kick back, relax, and play the games I want to play on my extended commutes through the Japanese countryside. I need a 3DS, Switch, or Vita to do that.
I played Undertale on Steam, but I never actually played Undertale, meaning I never got the chance to dig through the cracks and find all the goodies that the hardcore fanbase found. On the PS Vita and with an autumn of distant destinations ahead of me, I can finally start digging into this silly little game about a kid who winds up lost in a world of monsters.
Undertale is available now for the PS Vita and PlayStation 4 in addition to the original PC release.
