Week three of the Ultimate Coder Challenge is here! Windows 8 is a complete departure for Microsoft. When it comes to an operating system user interface (UI), they've maintained a steady path ever since Windows XP. In the decade or so that has elapsed, the PC climate has changed drastically, something I call the 'Apple effect.' . There is a new emphasis on design, touch, cloud, and cross device communication (phone to PC). If we truly are living in a post-PC era, Windows 8 has to usher Microsoft into the times. Gone is the antiquated 'Start' button to be replaced with a brilliant Modern UI heavily influenced the the stunning Windows Phone 7 and soon to be 8. With an all new user experience comes a host of new problems just looking for solutions. Developers who have successfully created applications for prior Windows variants now must learn a whole host of new API's and tackle features such as accelerometer, touch and more.
This week, while catching up with the developers, the challenges of coding seemed to be apparent. Lee Bamber had to remove old API's and confront a cavalcade of developmental issues while trying to get his 'Love Hearts' app to work perfectly. The Ultrabook itself, aside from preventing some developmental hurdles also represents a truly awesome opportunity to do some cool things. The folks at Blue Innovations are doing a really incredible job at giving 'Moneybag' specific Ultrabook functionality. I love what they have done with the touch sensors, making touches and taps serve as unique motions, and really embracing the Modern UI. Nice job guys!
I really have to hand it to Soma Games. I'm a video guy, and I love the video updates they have been providing. The editing is top nothc, but it really makes the team seem relatable. You can get to know them, see the passion in their eyes, and watch how they whiteboard out how to get the application on the Ultabook. I really do look forward to a new video from the team each week. The other teams may want to take note.
Each subsequent week I'll be featuring different teams, and offering thoughts, opinions, and updates. Keep on coding teams!
