Assassin's Creed IV - Black Flag - Freedom Cry - 1

An upcoming entry in the Assassin's Creed series is changing things up behind the scenes. While previous games in the series have been led by Ubisoft Montreal, the publisher is sinking $4 million into a new office space in Quebec City.

This includes making good on the company's promise to expand its staff, something we're happy to see in light of so many studio closures in recent years. I don't want to see the entire industry just working on Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed, but it's good to see the industry bringing on more staff instead of culling it.

Ubisoft Quebec has been working on the series since Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, but this is the first game it will take the lead on.

Getting a new studio with new directors and staff working on Assassin's Creed could make for an infusion of new and interesting ideas if the studio is brave enough to try.

To get an idea of the studio's pedigree, it has contributed not only to Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, but also to Revelations, Assassin's Creed III and its DLC The Tyranny of King Washington, and most recently Assassin's Creed IV's excellent Freedom Cry storyline. Those two side stories are some of the more interesting elements of recent Assassin's Creed games, so I'd love to see if it can help keep the nearly seven year old franchise feeling fresh.
