Think the Nexus 7 is an impulse purchase? The latest UbiSlate tablet from UK-based company Datawind will make you reconsider. Priced at £29.99 (roughly $50), this 7-inch Android slate is a bargain next to Google’s $230 tablet. Of course there’s a catch, and for the UbiSlate 7Ci that means unimpressive specs and an outdated operating system.
The UbiSlate 7Ci comes equipped with a 7-inch display, a 1GHz processor, 4GB of storage with a microSD card slot for adding more room, 512MB of RAM, a mini-USB port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The device is several software updates behind, running what appears to be a pretty standard version of Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich.
UbiSlate has become one of the most popular tablet brands in India—where it’s called the Aakash—thanks to a contract with the Indian government and a focus on bringing cheap devices to schools and lower economic areas. In the U.K., the UbiSlate 7Ci will face off against a growing market of entry-level tablets including Tesco’s £119 Hudl and the £80 Aldi Medion Lifetab. Both devices offer slightly better specs than the UbiSlate 7Ci, though that may not be enough to fend off this tablet’s aggressive pricing.
Update: Turns out the UbiSlate 7Ci is also available in the U.S. starting at $37.99. More info via the source link below.
