Today we’re going to take a look at the top 5 phones on Vodafone — our roundup of the devices which we believe are currently the best available for this carrier.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to read and comment on my ‘Top 5 Phones on O2‘ feature published last week. I got a little bit of stick from some of you for not listing the devices in the order in which I rate them, so this week that’s what I’m going to do.
#1. Samsung Galaxy S II
Right now, I believe the best device available in the U.K. is Samsung’s latest Galaxy S II. I’m not a huge fan of the Android operating system, but despite that there’s no denying that this device is super impressive. It features Samsung’s gorgeous 4.27-inch AMOLED display with an impressive resolution of 800 x 480. It may not have the fastest processor out of our top 5 devices at 1.2GHz, but its other specs make up for it, such as that 8-megapixel camera, the 1GB of RAM, and that super-slim 8.49mm form factor.
#2. HTC Sensation
If I walked into the Vodafone store and I had to buy a phone right there and then, and the Samsung Galaxy S II wasn’t in stock, I’d pick up the HTC Sensation — and I wouldn’t be too disappointed that I didn’t get the Galaxy S II. In fact, the specs for each device are very similar: In addition to a dual-core 1.2GHz processor, the Sensation sports a nice 4.3-inch qHD display at a resolution of 540 x 960, an 8-megapixel camera, and 1080p video recording.
#3. Samsung Galaxy S Plus
The Samsung Galaxy S Plus is a little fatter than its sibling, the Galaxy S II, and its rear-facing camera isn’t as good at just 5-megapixels, but its list of specs is still pretty impressive. It boasts a 1.4GHz processor — faster than any of the other devices here — Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and 8GB of internal storage. If the Galaxy S II and the HTC Sensation are a little out of your price range, the Galaxy S Plus is the device for you.
UPDATE: Correction: the Samsung Galaxy S Plus is not faster than the other devices. I had read somewhere prior to writing this article that the Plus has a dual-core chip like it’s sibling, which isn’t the case — it’s just a single-core. Apologies for the confusion. But the Galaxy S Plus is still a great handset.
#4. Apple iPhone 4
Okay, so it’s already well over 12 months old, and the iPhone 5 is just around the corner, but Apple’s iPhone 4 is still one of the best smartphones available right now. Its specifications may be a little long in the tooth, what with that single-core 1GHz processor and just a VGA camera up-front, but the iOS operating system alone is one reason why the iPhone 4 stands out among its rivals. Coupled with that awesome Retina display, some smartphones still find it difficult to beat Apple’s aging smartphone.
#5. BlackBerry Bold 9900
I know I’ll get some grief for putting the iPhone 4 above RIM’s latest and greatest BlackBerry Bold, but despite the advancements with BlackBerry 7 OS, it still doesn’t come close to Apple’s operating system — at least not for personal use. For those of you who are a fan of RIM’s BlackBerry, the new Bold 9900 is a must-have. Our own Jon Rettinger believes it’s the best BlackBerry yet, and there’s no denying that. In addition to its QWERTY keyboard, the device packs a 2.8-inch touchscreen, a 1.2GHz processor, and a 5-megapixel camera.
So that’s our roundup of the top 5 phones on Vodafone right now. I’m sure the top two or three will change with the release of the iPhone 5 later this year, and if the BlackBerry Torch 2 is anything like the Bold 9900, that may also feature next time around.
