Following yesterday’s big photo dump from Thor: Ragnarok, more details about the upcoming film have been revealed. Among them, we finally know why Thor has short hair, along with what happened to his trusty hammer, Mjolnir.
It’s true we already knew Thor would be without Mjolnir at some point, but now we know why. Entertainment Weekly revealed once the God of Thunder gets banished to Sakaar, “a barbaric planet ruled by the charming but nefarious Grandmaster (Jeff Goldblum),” he’s forced to become a gladiator. This leads to his fancy new ‘do and the unfortunate loss of his hammer.
Even without his long locks and powerful hammer, however, Thor becomes one of Sakaar’s top gladiators. That is, until he faces the Hulk, who actor Mark Ruffalo said is like a god on the distant planet. “He’s got a swagger,” Ruffalo said.
The two heroes eventually unite and embark on a road trip, which director Taika Waititi explained will give the film a lighter tone.
“A lot of what we’re doing with this film is, in a way, kind of dismantling and destroying the old idea and rebuilding it in a new way that’s fresh,” Waititi told EW. “Everyone’s got a slightly new take on their characters, so in that way, it feels like the first Thor.”
With a Strange cameo
Not that we needed further confirmation, but Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige said Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange will appear in Ragnarok, in one of only a few scenes that takes place on Earth. Supposedly, Strange will help Thor and Loki find Odin, who has been stranded on the planet following the events of Thor: The Dark World.
Thor: Ragnarok is scheduled for a November 3 release.
