Square Enix and Eidos Montreal have come together to produce a brand new, lengthy trailer for the upcoming reboot of the classic Thief franchise. Simply titled Thief this new take looks to employ both fresh and old gameplay mechanics and scenarios in order to win the hearts and minds of veteran and new fans.
The trailer itself is pretty great, showing off around six minutes of footage. The whole thing is voiced over by a single female narrator, and she does a great job of making the scope of Thief feel grand and dynamic.
The only bit that made me cringe was the note about a plot line that focuses around a character losing their memory.
Look, I know memory-loss is an easy way to reboot an experience, but this has to be one of the most tired and overused tropes in gaming. Leave it to daytime soaps, please. Come up with a more original reason for padding out backstory than amnesia. It's the worst.
Of course, the trailer more than makes up for that soft spot with the promise of the ability to freely conquer any objective and steal anything you desire. If those bits are really true, and Eidos Montreal has proven capable of them, we'll be extremely pleased with Thief when it drops.
Thief will slink onto the PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360 platforms on Feb. 25, 2014. We'll have more on the game as it comes.
