If you’ve got a smartphone, you’ve probably enjoyed a game or two to pass the time while taking a bathroom break. It’s not so easy for us gents, however, when we’re using a urinal. You remember Microsoft’s first Windows Phone ads called ‘Really’, in which one smartphone user dropped his device into a urinal.
To solve this problem, Captive Media, a U.K.-based company, has built high-tech urinals that provide users with games to play while they pee. But what’s most amazing about these games is that you control them with your… um… stream.
That’s right! The patented system is fitted with 12-inch LCD displays installed at eye-level above the urinal which uses sensors to detect the direction of your pee. To play the game, all you have to do is shift your flow from left to right.
There are three games built-in (all of which have very inventive names) called ‘On the Piste’, ‘Clever Dick’, and ‘Hosepipe Hero’. In the first, you speed through snowy mountains on a snowmobile; in the second, you play a trivia game; and in the third, you extinguish a burning building with your you-know-what.
Five of the urinals are set to be installed for a trial run at The Exhibit bar in South London, with a rollout across the U.K. early next year. When they’re not in use, the displays show a collection of adverts from “PTV” channels, and automatically startup a game when they sense that a user has stepped up to the urinal.
Gordon MacSween, one of the two Cambridge engineering graduates who founded Captive Media, said the systems have already attracted a huge amount of interest:
“We already had a huge amount of interest in the units from bars, pubs, exhibition centers, and retail outlets across the country and overseas–even though we’ve been trying to keep a lid on it.”
With the urinals, Captive Media hopes to change “the minute most men spend at the bowl from a boring interlude into an engaging experience which offers brands pre-game, in-game, and post-game promotional opportunities.”
I’m not really sure what to make of these urinals. I mean, they sure seem like good fun, but how are you going to feel if the guy next to you goes too far to the left and ruins your new Nike trainers?
What do you think of the urinals?

Use a chess clock to keep track of move and play times
These chess clocks feature dual clocks for players to control their own timers, and loud alarms so everyone knows when time is up. These clocks can be used for other 2-person games, like checkers, that may benefit from a game timer.
