It goes without saying that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt was the biggest video game release in May. Sony has confirmed as much, saying that it was the best selling title on the PlayStation Store with Mortal Kombat X, released in April, coming in as the runner-up.
That’s fine and all. The Witcher 3 is a great game. I might not be that into it, but I can definitely appreciate why a lot of people are head over heels for it. What I want to talk about today though are the warm, fuzzy feelings I get about seeing a few other select games topping Sony’s lists, like this one below!
PS Classics 1 The Misadventures of Tron Bonne 2 Suikoden II 3 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas 4 FINAL FANTASY VII 5 Castlevania: SotN 6 Crash Bandicoot 7 Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith 8 FINAL FANTASY IX 9 Star Wars: Dark Forces 10 Spyro the Dragon
Who would have ever expected to see The Misadventures of Tron Bonne topping out a sales list!?
The limited run of the original release failed to see it chart even back in the day, and it has been practically banished into gaming purgatory ever since with $200-$400 price tags. Only a very limited audience with an expendable income has been able to dabble in it. Thanks to digital distribution though, it is now a PlayStation Store best seller.
I’m glad I wasn’t the only fan looking forward to this release, and the campaign to get the word out there about how much fun this game is seems to have worked. I rented it for a weekend as a kid and loved it, but I hardly remember it being this fun!
The fact that my all time favorite video game, Suikoden II, came in second and above a Grand Theft Auto game is also pleasing to my brain’s happy place. The game has been on a bit of a tear since releasing in December, and a sale earlier this month obviously didn’t hurt its numbers.
Another favorite of mine that also benefited from a sale was the Mass Effect Trilogy. Slashed to the mere price of $5 for all three games, fans and newcomers pounced on the opportunity to experience them at such an amazing price. Okami HD followed closed behind, another benefactor of a price drop.
PS3 Games 1 Mass Effect Trilogy 2 Okami HD 3 Mortal Kombat 4 Minecraft: PlayStation 3 Edition 5 Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch 6 Injustice: Gods Among Us 7 Borderlands 2 8 Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater HD 9 Star Wars The Force Unleashed II 10 LittleBigPlanet 2 11 NASCAR ’14 12 The Walking Dead: The Complete First Season 13 Terraria 14 Burnout Paradise 15 Demon’s Souls 16 PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale 17 Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 18 Catherine 19 BioShock 20 Grand Theft Auto V
I dunno, it just makes me happy to see a few titles I love doing well, especially a decade and a half after they were first released. Any favorites of yours pop up on these lists?
