Eiji Aonuma, series producer for The Legend of Zelda, has offered his three favorite games in the classic franchise. He even offered one that he feels was underrated.
He gave the list to Game Informer. Here it is.
3: Twilight Princess – “Twilight Princess, because I wanted to create something better than Ocarina.”
2: Ocarina of Time – “Ocarina of Time is a game that gave me the opportunity to create a 3D world.”
1: Phantom Hourglass – “This is something my wife also likes, Phantom Hourglass. That’s number one. I was developing Twilight Princess, and the goal for that was to make something better than Ocarina. But then that game was something I proposed as a new style of gameplay, and I was a producer on that game for the first time, so I have a lot of sentiment for it.”
Most Underrated: Tri Force Heroes – “The Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes. I wanted the users to play a little bit more of that game and have that experience. I love that game.”
Aonuma, I’m sorry, but I wholeheartedly disagree with #1
I get it. I get that the guy has a really strong sentimental connection with The Phantom Hourglass. If you haven’t played that DS game, the biggest things you need to know are 1) it relies on touchscreen controls and 2) there’s a central dungeon that you need to visit again and again and again throughout the game.
Personally, I didn’t mind the controls. The dungeon? Oh my goodness! Talk about repetition and backtracking, that central dungeon was a huge issue for me.
My top three?

- The Wind Waker
- Majora’s Mask
I know Wind Waker is the weird one there, but that was a transitional game for me. I played it the year before college. Maybe I’m more like Aonuma than I thought…
