The Suicide Squad squad is an upcoming superhero film from Warner Bros. directed by James Gunn, who is best known for his work on Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. The film is expected to relaunch the Suicide Squad franchise.

With films like Birds of Prey, Wonder Woman 1984, and The Batman on the way, Gunn's The Suicide Squad is being billed as a major part of the DCEU's future. Here's everything you need to know about the upcoming movie.

May 10, 2019 - Guardians of the Galaxy actor to play King Shark in The Suicide Squad

Michael Rooker is in talks to join The Suicide Squad as King Shark, according to The Wrap. The character was initially set to appear in 2016's ill-fated Suicide Squad, but ultimately didn't make the cut.

Rooker and Gunn have a long history of working together, including on projects such as Guardians of the Galaxy and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. The two appear to be forming the king of director-actor relationship you see with Quentin Tarantino and Samuel L. Jackson or Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio.

King Shark is a relatively new character be comic standards, having only just been introduced in 1994. The humanoid shark and son of Chondrakha, the God of all Sharks, has had a number of team affiliations, including Suicide Squad.

DC fans have already seen King Shark appear in a role on The Flash. In his few appearances, the super villain was voiced by David Hayter and played by actor Dan Payne.

James Gunn's The Suicide Squad previously cast David Dastmalchian and Daniela Melchior as Polka-Dot Man and Ratcatcher, respectively.

All the big details

The Suicide Squad release date

Production for The Suicide Squad is expected to begin this fall, with a release date scheduled for August 6, 2021.

The Suicide Squad cast

Things are still up in the air regarding The Suicide Squad cast, but a few actors have been confirmed. Since the movie isn't yet in production, the cast is still being rounded out.

  • Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn
  • Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag
  • Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang
  • Viola Davis as Amanda Waller
  • David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man
  • Idris Elba in undisclosed role
  • Unknown actor as King Shark
  • Unknown actor as Peacemaker
  • Unknown actor as Ratcatcher

Notably, Will Smith and Jared Leto aren't expected to reprise their roles as Deadshot and Joker, respectively.

The Suicide Squad plot

Although various treatments of The Suicide Squad sequel have been written, they were all scrapped when James Gunn came onboard, because the director wanted to create a completely new take on the property.

In Suicide Squad, the government recruits the worst of the worst to carry out a high-risk mission. In all likelihood, Gunn's film will follow a similar plot, but won't feature Enchantress attempting to eradicate humanity.

That's about as much as we know so far. With production not expected to begin until fall 2019, it's unlikely we'll know the full story for a while.

The Suicide Squad vs. Suicide Squad

Here's where things get tricky. James Gunn's The Suicide Squad is not to be confused with David Ayer's Suicide Squad, which came out in 2016. Gunn's film won't be connected to Ayer's movie, even though it's going to use some of the same characters and actors.

Ayer was actually set to direct a Suicide Squad sequel before he dropped out. After several production delays, Gunn was eventually brought on, but only after he was fired from directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (don't worry, he's been rehired).

Suicide Squad earned upwards of $700 million at the global box office upon its release, so by no means was it a failure. It was, however, mostly derided by critics, with much of the derision aimed at the tone, plot, and Jared Leto's take on Joker.

Having worked on the first two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Gunn has plenty of experience bringing a motley crew of characters together. Expect Gunn's The Suicide Squad to have the same level of humor and heart as Guardians when the movie is released.
