Razer is known for making some of the best computer hardware around. It is natural to assume that that craftsmanship would extend to its brand new Razer Phone. That’s what JerryRigEverything wanted to confirm with his durability testing of the Razer Phone, and the results were a bit of a mix bag.
The Razer Phone’s body is made of anodized aluminum coated in a slick black paint. It looks fantastic, but don’t expect it to hold up well over time. It can obviously take in deep scratches because it’s aluminum, but even minor scuffs with keys are retained surprisingly easy. Rubbing keys across the backs doesn’t leave permanent marks, but it does leave remnants of friction. This has not been an issue with past aluminum phones like the iPhone or newer devices with the OnePlus 5T.
Oddly enough, Razer also made the decision to include Gorilla Glass 3 on the front. Newer devices come with Gorilla Glass 5. The Razer Phone takes in scratches at the same rate as other phones, but it probably won’t hold up great over time.
It’s a bigger issue with the camera glass cover. Scratching the glass with a razor leaves deep gashes. Most devices nowadays include a strong glass cover to prevent easy damage when you put it down. That is not the case with the Razer Phone.
One of the bright spots for the Razer Phone’s durability is the side button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner. It is made of plastic and takes in deep scratches with a razor blade, but it still continues to work flawlessly. It’s the same story with the bend test. Unlike the brittle Nextbit Robin, the Razer Phone holds up like a tank.
Overall, it’s probably best to put the Razer Phone in a case as soon as you buy it. You can check out JerryRigEverything’s full round of testing in the video down below.
