Tesla’s fastest ever production car will also be the company’s most expensive. At its semi truck event on Thursday, Tesla CEO Elon Musk also unveiled the new Roadster, a luxury car that can reportedly get over 600 miles on a single charge.
So, how much will Tesla’s new premium vehicle cost? $200,000, with a $50,000 deposit required to reserve the vehicle. That’s on the opposite spectrum of Tesla’s Model 3, which required a $1,000 deposit and will cost under $30,000 after incentives.
At the current price point, the car challenges the top luxury automakers on the market. According to Musk, the point of the new Roadster was to “give a hardcore smackdown to internal combustion cars.” It’s certainly a statement.
As for the Roadster’s specs, it’s unlike anything we’ve seen. If and when Tesla actually makes the car, the automaker projects it will go from 0-60mph in 1.9 seconds, making it the fastest production car ever. It can do a quarter mile in 8.9 seconds.
With a projected range of 620 miles, Tesla says someone can drive from Los Angeles to San Francisco and back on a single charge. The projected range beats the snot out of Tesla’s current lineup of electric vehicles, including the Model 3, which gets just over 200 miles on a single charge.
This is assuming Tesla can actually produce the vehicle, which it says will begin in 2020. That’s very ambitious for a company still struggling to produce the Model 3, but based on what we’ve seen, we’re rooting for the automaker to make it happen.
