UPDATE (5:30PM EST): It looks like network functionality has returned. The total outage time was right around 4-5 hours.

Is anyone still experiencing problems? Or is it all smooth sailing?

UPDATE (5:00PM EST): A lot of users, included you folks in the comments below, are reporting that the PSN is back up! Try your console.

If you're still in the unfortunate category (like me), be patient. They're obviously working on the issue.

UPDATE (3:30PM EST): Sony's European division posted the following Tweet at roughly 3:00PM EST:

Current indications are that we'll be restoring PlayStation Network services in approx. two hours. We appreciate your patience.

For some users, the PlayStation Network is currently inaccessible. This has been the case for roughly three hours since the time we published this story.

Sony has confirmed the outage via their official Twitter account. Here's their Tweet:

We're aware that some of you are having issues trying to log into PSN. We're working to resolve the issue, and we'll update you here.

And here's what Sony's European arm said on Twitter regarding the outage:

PlayStation Network engineers are working hard on restoring the service. However, we have no news on when it will be back online.

What, exactly, caused this current outage has not been discussed. I'd just say you shouldn't automatically assume that Sony's been targeted in another hack; however, don't rule that possibility out, either. It's hard to not immediately consider Sony's previous hacking issue when an outage like this occurs. Unfortunately for the hardware manufacturer, that's something that won't be going away any time soon.

So, just in case, be prepared to hop on and change your passwords once the network has been restored. It's better to be safe than sorry when it comes to network security.

While Sony indicates that only some users have been affected, everyone I've personally talked to online says that their systems can't access the network at all. The issue is definitely happening in multiple regions around the world, given the fact that both North American and European Sony offices are responding over social media outlets. So, for the sake of curiosity, can you get online right ? Assuming, of course, that you are near your PlayStation 3.

If and when Sony updates their network's status, we'll either update this story or run another post. Keep checking back, we'll run the news as soon as we get it.
