The first PlanetSide is finally going to catch up to its sequel's free-to-play plan. It was originally released in 2003 during a huge MMO boom that was based heavily on subscription payment plans.

However, this is now a different time and age, and subscriptions are slowly losing out to the free-to-play model, and President John Smedley announced the news on his Twitter feed that Sony Online Entertainment wants to bring its classic MMOFPS up to speed with the rest of the industry.

The announcement comes just in time for the game's 10th birthday.

Despite having a successful sequel on the market, the original still remains a popular alternative, especially for those looking to see the evolution of the series. It was first released to mixed reviews for maybe being a little too ambitious for its time, but its longevity has allowed it to survive as an early MMO classic.

No time frame was given on the jump to free-to-play, but expect to see it happen soon.
