The NPD results for March are officially in, and they confirm some news that Nintendo was sharing a few weeks back. The Nintendo Switch is the best selling system over its first month in the company’s history.
Even further, it’s the second best-selling system in one month since 1995. The first, of course, is the PlayStation 4.
Here’s NPD Analyst Sam Naji:
“March 2017 will go down in history books as the month Nintendo broke records. The Nintendo Switch had the biggest hardware launch for a Nintendo platform and the second biggest launch for any video game platform since 1995, the time NPD began tracking this category.”
Off to the races, but is it sustainable?
Can the Nintendo Switch maintain this momentum? That’s the major question mark hovering over the future of this new platform for the house of Mario. Is there enough after The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to keep things rolling?
Arguably, maybe… We have Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Splatoon 2, ARMS and Super Mario Odyssey this year for banner launches. Then we have all the smaller indies that look incredibly, plus some bigger but maybe lesser known games like Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
The lineup for the remainder of 2017 on the Nintendo Switch looks great, but one has to wonder if interest will hold. Stay tuned.
