Today, Game Informer announced what will be on the cover of the July edition of their magazine: the next instalment of the Gears of War franchise.

That’s right. The next Gears of War game has been confirmed and will be detailed, titled and officially announced at Microsoft’s E3 keynote. Game Informer had this to say about the announcement:

“…we’re saving the full unveiling of the game’s title until Monday during Microsoft’s E3 press conference, but we can confirm that our next cover is the new installment in the Gears of War series and is coming to Xbox 360.”

Since Epic has already gone ahead and labeled Gears as a trilogy, we don’t expect this announcement to be Gears of War 4. In fact, looking at the Game Informer cover hints that this could very well be a prequel to the Gears of War trilogy. A shadowed figure that could easily be Marcus Fenix is pictured in handcuffs. This would make sense seeing that the first act of the original Gears of War has Marcus escaping from prison. Gears of War 3 then goes on to explain exactly how and why Marcus was prisoned in the first place. A prequel would be the next logical step, but of course until Monday we can’t say for sure.

Following Microsoft’s Gears of War announcement Monday morning, Game Informer will proceed with a month of Gears of War online content. The first of which will be a teaser trailer giving us a sneak peak at what we can expect to see in the month ahead.

What do you think about Epic Games tapping back into the Gears of War franchise for another round? Is this going to be a prequel, Gears of War 4, or something completely different? Be sure to check back to TechnoBuffalo on Monday for the full scoop on what Epic has planned for the next iteration of Gears of War.
