If there is one thing I didn't like about The Wind Waker back on the GameCube, it was way too easy. Coming from the brutal adventures of A Link to the Past, Link's Awakening, and the NES originals, I found it a little unforgivable that I completed it on my first run-through without kicking the bucket once.
Nintendo has a fix for that in the new The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD with a brand new Hero Mode, which promises to make the green hero's quest much harder. Nintendo has just released a new trailer explaining how they intend to bring you to the brink of tears with just two simple steps.
One: Enemies are going to do twice as much damage. No problem, since games like this should be more about memorizing patterns and perfecting combat so that you shouldn't have to worry about being hit. And of course, if Link takes one to the kisser, there are always hearts ready to be dug up in between fights right?
Two: Nope. Nintendo has done away with hearts, making it much more difficult for Link to replenish his health. How much do the Wii U controllers cost to get fixed again? Granted, the trailer shows Link not finding them in grass or in pots, but it mentions nothing about them still be dropped by enemies.
Regardless, two little fixtures are all The Wind Waker needs to make it one tough and frustrating game. Even on the game's normal mode, I found it more than a chore to get to the end of this sprawling quest.
Hard games have been making a much needed comeback over the past few years, and I'll be sure to dive into Hero Mode before attempting anything the classic difficulty. Who knows, I might never go back.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker will be released on Oct. 4 exclusively for the Wii U. You can nab it early in digital form from the Nintendo eShop starting Sept. 20.
