The Last of Us (12)

Whether The Last of Us will get some kind of visual upgrade when it hits PlayStation 4 this summer was never in question, but now we're starting to get some more details about just how that'll manifest.

One way will be with the character models themselves, according to an interview with Creative Director Neil Druckmann in Edge magazine.

The character models used in cutscenes, which were swapped out for lower fidelity models in-game on PS3, can now be used throughout the game.

"We don't build it with high assets in mind to then port it, but it did give us a leg up," says Druckmann. He adds that they might not have made the call to release the upgraded version if this hadn't been possible.

The main roadblock they're running against now is fitting all the new content on the disc, rather than worrying about whether the system can handle the game. The team had to re-render all the cutscenes at 1080p resolution and 60fps, in addition to trying to fit the game's DLC onto the disc.

Naughty Dog is looking at adding new features as well, but is focused on getting "a more solid version of the same experience" working first.
